EGR valves are devices used in automobiles to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, which are pollutants and harmful to health and the environment. These valves recirculate a portion of the exhaust gases back into the intake, thereby reducing the temperature and oxygen in the combustion chamber. This results in more efficient combustion and less NOx generation. Location: The EGR valve is connected between the exhaust manifold and the intake manifold. Main function: It redirects a portion of the exhaust gases back to the engine to reduce combustion temperature. NOx reduction: By lowering the temperature, the formation of nitrogen oxides (NOx), a major pollutant, decreases. Electronic control: The ECU regulates when to open and close the valve based on engine conditions. Valve types: They can be pneumatic (older) or electronic (more precise in modern engines). EGR valves were first used in the United States in the 1970s, and since 1996 have been mandatory in Europe under Euro 2 regulations. They are used in both diesel and gasoline engines, although they are more common and larger in the former. Their operation depends on several sensors that measure engine temperature, engine speed, and acceleration load. This data is sent to the engine control unit (ECU), which opens or closes the EGR valve depending on driving conditions. A well-maintained EGR valve improves fuel efficiency and helps comply with environmental regulations. EGR valves can fail due to clogging caused by the buildup of carbon, the residue from incomplete fuel combustion. This can cause loss of power, jerking, increased fuel consumption, and the emission of highly harmful gases. To prevent this, it is recommended to drive at high engine speeds and in low gears from time to time, and to clean the EGR valve periodically with specific products or with the help of a professional.
